African Hunting Safaris in the Zimbabwe Big Game Safari

Zimbabwe Big Game Safari

Hunting Concessions

An African hunting safari in the Matetsi Safari Area of north western Zimbabwe is every hunter’s dream, a true classic African adventure. Big game hunting falls into a class of its own, which is physically challenging, adventurous and adrenaline charged. The Matetsi area lies between the Hwange- and Kazuma National Parks, close to the world famous Victoria Falls, and is Zimbabwe’s oldest and best known hunting safari area. The game rich Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe’s largest park totaling some 13,000 square kilometers, together with Matetsi Safari Area, Kazuma National Park, Zambezi National Park and Pandamasui Forest area all combine to form one of Africa’s largest un-spoilt wilderness areas over 20,000 square km in extent.

The Matetsi area is one of the most rich and diverse big game areas in Zimbabwe. In the dry season, the Matetsi River is one of a few water sources left, attracting large numbers of game. Big game and plains game are hunted in the concession areas (Unit 1 & 6) as well as Unit 3. African buffalo with a span of 40” and elephants with more than 60 lbs tusks are common sights. This hunting area also produces top quality sable antelope trophies. With a year round hunting season, the best time for buffalo and elephant is from August to November, and for lion and leopard from May to November.

Unit 3
Unit 3 is located in the prime location which forms the corner bounded in the south by Hwange National Park, west by the Zimbabwe/Botswana international border, the north by Matetsi Unit 2 and the East by Matetsi Unit 5. This is our prime area with a very well appointed camp and due to being the closest to the falls it is very sought after. The daily rates are higher than in our other areas, but the trophy fees are slightly lower (refer to Hunting Rates).

Hunting Camps

Arriving at the Victoria Falls Airport, you will be met by your professional hunter and transferred to the hunting camp by vehicle (1 to 2 h drive). The beautifully located hunting camps in Matetsi and Ngamo consist of thatched bungalows with en-suite bathroom and 220V electricity. Meals are being served in the big living area which also has a bar. These camps are used as a base for the big game safaris in the hunting concession areas.

Tshowe Camp - Matetsi Unit 3
The safari lodge in Matetsi Unit 3 is known as Tshowe Camp The camp forms part of the main homestead on the concession and comprises of three very comfortable bedrooms all with private bathrooms, overhead fans and a verandah. There is a fourth separate thatched chalet also en-suite. A comfortable bar, lounge, dining room and fireplace round off the facilities.

Access to Unit 3 from Victoria Falls International Airport is a relatively short 1 hour drive. This in turn makes for day trips to the Victoria Falls for sightseeing and shopping easy to arrange. Please note that transportation needs to be arranged (at an additional cost) since the hunting vehicles on site are not suitable for that purpose and may not be available.
